New laptop advice needed

Options
My partners laptop has just given up the ghost. This wouldn't be such a problem if she wasn't in another country studying and will be for the next few months. I've said I can take her a new one out there when I go out next weekend and this may be the solution. She's considered buying one there but of course the warranty won't be valid here when she returns in 3 months for good.

Also shes using a belgium internet provider called mobistar on a wireless network card and router supplied by the provider and what with people having so many problems with vista if a new one is bought is it best to stick with xp for now? we know this works it was on the old one.

Also wheres the best place to get a cheap decent laptop under £350 refurbished would probably be okay though i've yet to fully talk to her about what she wants.
I'll need to get it fairly soon so dell is out of the question 10 day delivery etc.

Right now shes stuck doing her doctorate on bits of paper any advice welcome.

Thanks dan! weird that xp home is £10 more than vista basic
  • There are loads to choose from at laptopsdirect.co.uk plus you get 2% back at Quidco. I ordered one last night on the free one week delivery option (you have to buy an accessory) and its scheduled for delivery tomorrow according to the online tracking from the courier. They also do guaranteed delivery.

There are quite a few cheap Acers out there at the moment.

Tesco direct is also selling laptops but not sure what they have for £350 but you can arrange to collect from certain stores the next day.

    Hope that helps. A.

I've just reserved the xp one for collection tomorrow, which has dropped to £299.99 its a shame as she wanted to get a nicer one some time soon, but thats not possible at such short notice, so bargain basement it is.

I bought the budget xp one today and it seems ideal for her uni work, i-tunes and the net which it all thats needed.

Vista basic seems pretty naff in comparison to XP and looks to be missing loads of features and it was all that was available on the budget you only get premium on the £400+ laptops at the moment.

Festivals and holidays beckon for our cash instead :p rather than computers which just seem to de-note work, which is what i'll be doing this weekend
