Cannot view home-made dvd on laptop

Hi,
I am trying to transfer old vhs recordings onto dvd.
I have borrowed a video/dvd recorder from my inlaws (the type of machine that looks like an old vhs player but has separate vhs and dvd slots alongside each other). By pressing 'play' on the video, and 'record' on the dvd, I have managed to transfer an old video of my children when they were younger onto a blank dvd.
The dvd plays fine in the dvd player, but will not play on my pc. Windows Media player says that the disc is empty, and vlc says 'Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///D:/'. Check the log for details.'

Any ideas? - I would like to edit the video into little clips to make a Chrismas dvd gift for parents. thanks in advance

Do you have the option to 'close' or 'finalise' the DVD or similar? Usually recorded DVDs will not play on other devices until they have been finalised, once this process is complete you can no longer record any data to the DVD but it should work in standard DVD devices.

Your PC cannot read whatever format you have burned the DVD as.

Thanks for the replies. I just left it record until it got to the end of the dvd, which was 2 hours. At that point there was still some footage left on the vhs, but it seemed to stop automatically, so I just ejected the dvd - is it too late to go back and try anything else once I have taken it out of the dvd recorder?

What is the make and model of the DVD recorder? I would think it should be possible to put the DVD back in and finalise it although I don't have much experience with standalone DVD recorder units.

Thanks for the advice! :j I did put it back in and when I found the disc management menu, there was an option to finalise. It now plays in the laptop. All I have to do now is repeat the process for all the other videos we have and then choose the best bits to make a single dvd for Xmas presents. No pressure!!! Thanks again x :beer::T:A
