Conflicting info on 40 days notice

I have been led to believe by a friend that the 40 day notice only starts once HBOS have cashed their cheque.
I sent a letter and cheque for charges for the last 6 years to HBOS on 11 March, and they cashed the cheque on 10 April.

When will the 40 day notice begin?

That is not the case kcasey.
The 40 days starts from the date of your letter not the cheque being cashed. Some banks are sending the £10 cheque back anyway. Have a read through some of the posts here - there is a whole thread on the 40 day issue.
