How much to spend on wedding presents?

Just because they have asked for vouchers doesn't mean you have to get vouchers. Something like a wedding picture frame or something needn't cost too much but can look so much more. If they care about you which I hope they do they won't fuss about amounts anyway and if they do then tough. There is not set amount to give.

If you want to do vouchers then I think £20 is more than enough especially when you are struggling.

I'm sure they would be upset if you got into debt for their wedding gift.
  • I'd spend what ever you can afford. I'm sure your brother in law will just be grateful that you will be celebrating with them.
  • Is £100 affordable for you? I would think this a reasonable figure for a wedding gift.
Overactively underachieving for almost half a century
  • We didn't get anything from SIL when we got married... we weren't bothered in the slightest. We only found out because we got a gift with no tag on so we compared the gift list/gifts with the guest list to see if we could match the mystery gift up with a guest. Needless to say there were 3 guests/groups that didn't get us anything and we don't think any less of them for it. If you can't afford it, then don't.
    MFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.

Whereas I think £25 is a reasonable figure for a wedding gift. (In fact very generous in your current situation.)

So this goes to show, there is no set right amount. We ensured everyone coming to our small wedding who was on a low income/next generation down were told they were not to buy us anything.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
