Bank charges for not paying yourself

My nephew has a Santander current account and a savings account also with Santander.

He pays £20 a week into the savings account by standing order.

He went overdrawn recently and they have made a penalty charge for the standing order which leaves him further overdrawn till he gets paid again in december.

Can he appeal or reclaim these charges ?
Regards

Phill (Merseyside UK)

It does not matter that the payment was for another of his accounts with Santander - in that case he had the opportunity to cancel the standing order himself.

He can visit the bank and explain that it was an error on his part.

Sometimes a bank will remove charges if it is the first time they have been levied, and that is on goodwill - but if they do, then tell your nephew not to expect them to do it a second time.

Can he transfer money back from his savings account to brink his account back into credit? That would show that he was serious at controlling his accounts.

I too would suggest he puts his current account back in order asap, taking the money back from his savings account if necessary. The charges will far outweigh any interest he will otherwise receive.

If he does this, and this is the first time he has incurred bank charges, then a polite request often proves fruitful in getting the charge refunded :)

He may also want to think about the suitability of a standing order if he is likely to end up in this situation again. Perhaps manually moving funds as and when he can afford them may be more suitable.
This may mean his current savings account is not the best savings account for him. If not, he should make an appointment with his bank to see what better alternatives they could offer someone in his situation :)

Santander policy is he can have 1 months worth of charges refunded for his LIFE WITH SANTANDER AS A CUSTOMER, provided he has not had any refunded since November 1st 2011.
