The term housewife!

Options
I heard it on the news this morning that the term housewife was deragatory and it should be called domestic seo when you take into consideration all the jobs.

Do you like the term?

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Nope.

I don't see housewife as derogatory, although I know many do use it in a derogatory way. Housewife is short hand for so much more, and while many have tried to make me feel bad for it it's the right choice for me and my household.

I would love to be a housewife!

What's wrong with that term? You are a wife who looks after the house, a homemaker, a housewife!

Unfortunately I have a full time job, so I'm chief earner and part time housewife lol
Can't think of anything smart to put here...
  • surely most people understand the definition of "housewife"??
    and know its not derogatory???

a "housewife" is at the helm of the home, keeping everything running

PC madness to be upset at the term

I don't like housewife personally but I don't find it derogatory and find domestic seo laughable.

I do like the term homesteading though.
  • I suppose times move on ,but my mother and grandmother were proud to call themselves just that!

I suppose these days we're educated or conditioned to think of being a housewife as something a bit lowly..

I actually like being a 'housewife', or homemaker as the Americans would say.
  • i have to admit that when somone asks me, "what do you do for a living"?, I cringe when I have to say Housewife. I feel like people think that maybe I am lazy as both my children are in Primary school. :o.

But there is so much more to our situation.

We live on a smallholding, so I have animals and veg to tend to.
I do my self employed husbands accounts and clerical work which hypothetically pays me 5k per year.
and we have no close living family at all, so I have no childcare help for holidays and sickness.

It does'nt stop me feeling rubbish because I don't ACTUALLY get a wage every month .
  • Whilst not a wife I would refer to myself as a homemaker, even though I work (currently from home), I don't think it's derogatory at all and would wear the badge with pride as it's recognition of the work that goes in to running a home in my opinion!

I'm very traditional and know that whilst I take care of domestic 'chores' as it were he takes care of me, works damn hard and trains full time on top of his job and does the manly things!

Each to their own opinion though

Why don't you describe yourself as a "Smallholder"?

If you're in the books as a business expense, why doesn't the money actually change hands? You're doing the books - make it happen!

what's a domestic seo anyway? Never heard of the term and wouldn't understand it if someone told me that's what they were. I'd have to ask for clarification and chances are they'd revert to the word "housewife" to put it into a context that I'd understand. Why not save everyone time and use terminology that everyone relates to. Any word can be derogatory if the context intends it to be.
