Can modern TVs screen used as Computer Monitors?

Probably a daft question, but is my non-High definition hard disk recorder any use for recording (and playing back) in High definition if it receives a High Definition freeview signal via the TV?
I'm perhaps not quite understanding you, if your HDD recorder is not HD then it won't be able to record or play HD material - it will be limited to standard definition recording and output.

cepheus - the only thing that receives the picture from the HD tuner in your TV, is the screen on your TV. The only thing your Freeview recorder is receiving, is SD Freeview from its own tuner.0
