I had various payday loans when I started my DMP and yes they do huff and puff and moan. Just ignore them, keep strong and let Step Change pay your agreed monthly payment.

They may get annoyed (which is always fun when some vile moron rings you demanding this and demanding that. All you do is repeat the following).

I'm on a dmp with step change

    My ref no is xxxxxxx

    Have a good day

    Phone goes down

Imagine said vile person exploding as you hang up, cos he cant bully you.

Go make a cup of tea.

You mind me asking what payday type companies you used? Were they worse than the mainstream lenders for hasseling you?

  • Thank-you everyone for your responses. I'll no doubt be back for further advice.

I have to say that I am absolutely terrified of the PD Lenders harassing me, having read some horror stories on different forums. The sensible bit of me knows that I've made the right decision and am facing up to my debt and wanting to pay it all off at a rate I can afford but then the frightened kid inside me is thinking of threats of bailiffs, bald men with baseball bats!? etc when I live alone!! Just typing this has reduced me to tears!! :(

Before you default go on to your online details with them and change your work phone numbers so they cannot contact you there.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
  • Most of them won't let you do that now unfortunately. You have to ring and sometimes they have to make contact with you on the number you give before they'll change their records. Worth a go though.

  • Suzy please don't worry - dismiss what horrors you may have read, some of it could be 'Chinese whispers' even in the best intention this is what makes people ill with worry - your best trying not to get to caught up in this how they will act I think it is half the battle, take each day as it comes and keep hold of the memory when something goes your way

As with everything people can have different experiences - no two following accounts of PDL's are really exactly the same

Focus on the positives - your dealing with this in the right way for you and you have the ability to make a complaint, not all payday loan companies ring places of work as a "sure-fire first thing" especially if you can get to them first and I'd even be going back to 2011 dare I say it I had some of the 'alleged baddens' though left wondering if anything, just stay polite and what doesn't break you will make you in the end xx

I sent all of my 6 PD Lenders an email Sunday evening stating I was entering into a DMP with Step Change and to ask them to freeze interest and charges, and I offered a token payment of £1 while DMP being set up.

One response so far from Mr Lender:
Thank you for informing us that your finances are now being handled by a Debt Management Agency. We will require correspondence from your Debt Management Agency immediately to stop your account incurring any further interest and charges.

Please note that your Mr Lender reference number is: MLXXXXXXX

With regards to interest and charges, I can see you are intent on clearing your debt. A token payment while we wait to hear from your DMA will stop these charges being applied.

    Our bank details are as follows;

    Account Name: Mr Lender
    Bank Name: Barclays
    Sort Code: XX-XX-XX
    Account Number: XXXXXXXX
    Ref: MLXXXXXX

Should you require any further assistance regarding your account, please do not hesitate to contact us.
    Kind Regards,

I feel a mini victory! I know it won't all be plain sailing but has put me an ease somewhat! I'm guessing the calls will start tomorrow when payments default - well i'm hoping they do as I've asked both Bank and PD Lenders to cancel CPA and there will be no money in the account!

Quick quid were ok, rang everyday but i just ignored them. payday uk were annoying but i won that battle and they sent me to mackenzie hall. payday express no problem at all.

Wonga the ***** cleared my account out but that was before they became cuddly wonga running scared of the FOS.

Most were fine you just have to take no s*** from them and let them know you will only be paying x amount no matter what they tell you (payday loan collectors are born liars, there mums must be so proud).

    Good luck.

Hello there. Be sure to cancel any 'continuous payment authorities' with these companies. If you have any debts with the bank you would have been advised to move elsewhere anyway.

We've a useful fact sheet on Payday Loans, you can find it here:

    Best wishes,

    David @ NDL.
