Get washine machine fixed or buy a new one??

our washine machine has stopped working properly. DH thinks the motor has gone and I've had an estimate to repair it of about £100 (but I wonder if it will end up being more than that).

Its a Siemens, and was left by the previous owners here so is at least 3 years old - probably at least 5 - I know you can't get the model anymore. New Siemens machines seem to start at about £500.

Its a really good machine, I've been very happy about it ... but what should I do, what would you do - get it fixed, or buy a new one? Can't decide which would be a more worthwhile option!

Siemens machines are, as you've noted, expensive and quite good. It would be a shame to bin an otherwise good machine for the sake of a £100 repair.

Repair's definitely greener than replacement and probably more economical IF the machine is otherwise perfect.

Have you considered a refurbed machine? They usually have some guarantee and are a better price than new.

You can get reasonably priced very good Siemens machines at John Lewis with quidco cashback. I bought this one, with a 5 year guarantee, but there are some cheaper.

  • Thanks for your thoughts.
I've found a local engineer whose call out charge is £30 and so hopefully it will be fixed for less than £100, he seemed to think so over the phone. Fingers crossed it works out - as mentioned, its a lot greener to keep this one going!

Ooh, can you not find one with no call out charge:sad: I'm lucky to have the choice of 2 who have no call out charge and they'll also not try and fix the machine if it's not worth it. Hope you get it sorted.
  • Hi,

my machine started spinning intermittently, checked this site for help, and decided, it was the brushes on the motor.

Got brushes from my local electrical shop, and fitted them myself,

and here's the good bit, cost £4.50.
