Best margarine for cakes

Hi everyone

I usually use butter but this gets expensive! Can someone please recommend me a margarine?

Thank you!

I use Flora buttery, I wait till it is on a special offer usually it is on at £1.00 for the 500 gram tub at one of the main supermarkets every few weeks, I stock up when I see it as it always has a really long date on it.

We use "Greenvale" "Perfect for baking" from Aldi.

Cannot recall the price but very reasonable and good results.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

  • Thanks guys. I didn't realise you could use the spread ones. I thought you had to buy stork or something similar!

    Hi

It should show you on the tub what it is suitable for, the very low fat ones are not generally suitable but most of the normal ones are,

  • I only use Stork (or butter). I actually prefer Stork to butter for sponges, I think it gives a lighter, fluffier texture.

I've tried many other brands of margarine over the years and haven't liked any of them. A few (notably the own brand stuff from wholesalers which my old boss forced me to use while she was cutting costs) actually have a really unpleasant gritty texture, and some of them (the low fat ones) have too high a water content. Things like bogstandard (not light) Flora or Utterly Buttery are ok and will do the job fine, but I prefer Stork.
  • I think I'll give stork a go. At least no one will use it for spreading!

I won't go to the fridge only to find it's disappeared :-)
  • Great question, had only been wondering about this myself.
Thanks for your top tips i think Ill try stork too. ;-)

    Gotta be St0rk!
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
