length of curtains

ok. the exchange has gone through . and we are looking at needing to buy some new curtains ( currently have made to measure blinds at the windows so need to leave them here)

now the windows in question have the rads right underneath them. so is it better to have the curtains floor length and go right over the rads or to have them stop just above the rads, but below the window sill?

I can see your dilemma, but personally I would have curtains that went down behind the radiator as far as you can, to the bracket that fastens them to the wall.

No point in long ones covering the radiators as the heat will mostly stay in the window void.

i have warm air heating and love it so the question doesn't come up in my house.

  • I agree with McKneff, my curtains tuck down behind the radiators so the heat stays in the room, not up In to the cold void between the curtains and the window.

I would agree with above, have the curtains just long enough to tuck behind the radiators. No point in wasting material or gas.

There's a heating and an interior decorating question here. Personally I really dislike short curtains and love the luxurious look of them pooling on the floor.

Gradually I'm working around the house putting in blinds for privacy and then (depending on the room) curtains as well for a smart look or just leaving the blinds alone where a more minimal look suits.

So, to answer your question it depends on your taste and budget but covering radiators will prevent heat circulating.

If yu actually like long curtains you could still have them and just leave them back permanently but have some blinds that you can open and shut each day. Still a bit cold for winter time though.

I wouldn't do floor-length curtains, - as others have said the heat from the radiators will just be wasted, as it'll go behind the curtains. Long enough to tuck the curtains behind the rads sounds like a good option.

I do floor length curtains and I have a radiator cover, when pulled I simple drape the curtains along the top of the radiator cover to let the heat out, but I like how they pool in the floor when open.

er - it isnt a 'good' look to have the curtains 'tucked' behind radiators! may be moneysaving, but not 'fashionable'! I would go for just above radatiors, that way the heat goes into the room and the curtains keep any draughts out.

My aunt has double curtains. She has shorter ones that actually close above the radiator, then longer side 'dress' curtains. It looks really nice.

You can get double curtain rails similar to this.

And you can save money by not having full width full length curtains - if that makes any sense - as they are just for show. The shorter inner ones can be fuller because they're the ones that close. You could have the same fabric or contrasting.
