Advice needed car insurance claim agst 3rd party

Carclaimer
Hope for some advice as never had to make insurance claim before!
My car was parked up and hit by another driver. He has admitted totally his fault and I have been in contact with his insurer, who have sent an engineer to inspect and since made an offer to settle claim.
I had an independent estimate on repair circa £1500
The 3rd party insurer has said the car is worth £1700 and so uneconomically to repair.
They have offered me £1700 and they will collect car or I can keep car and they will deduct £495 from £1700 offered.
Any advice / ideas on how best to negotiate on with them on this please?

is £1700 a fair valuation?
Should be enough so you can go buy a replacement from a dealer0 -
Car is a VW Golf GTi 2.0 (51 plate) and 85,000 milage. Really good condition - and full VW dealer service history.
Looking on Autotrader for similar and prices range from £2,995 to £2,295. The ones at lower end have higher milage or older cars.
In addition, nothing to do with claim, but may be losing my job and so may take money and drive damaged car (mostly body work damage, except will need to replace new electric wing mirror needed).
Am I able to make some claim to cover inconvience of having to get repairs down / buy new vehicle depending on what I decide to do?
If so how best to raise this with insurer?0 -
Ignore auto trader as they are always a lot higher than book, so that people can knock them down.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

My look on autotrader shows they start at about a grand http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201211204301127/sort/default/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_100000_miles/seller-type/trade_adverts/model/golf/make/volkswagen/onesearchad/used/radius/1501/page/2/postcode/bh25dy/keywords/gti?logcode=p so the £1700 doesn't sound too bad.
Having said that, if yours is especially good then you could probably talk them into a bit more. Telling them you need a hire car until it's resolved will help loosen the purse strings and even more so if you tell them you'll hand the case over to a credit hire company0 -
Tell them you will accept the £1700 if they let you keep the car with no additional cost or £295 or whatever you feel happy with.
Not sure where you got £3000 from. Except maybe the garages that sell cars to people with no money. Low weekly payments on vastly overpriced cars.
I think £1700 is very fair.
