Zen sleek mp3 problem?

I have a creative zen sleek mp3 player. It has the same charging connector at the bottom as the ipod so I stupidly bought an Itrip type device which could not only play my tunes through my car radio but, i thought, charge my zen through the cigarette lighter.
The problem is that when I plugged the charger into my player it didn't work. Fine - so I wasted £20 and can probably give the gadget to someone with an ipod. However, I now find that when I plug my zen into my pc it is not recognized.
The battery still charges but I obviously can't update my tunes. Can't replace firmware either. Does it sound like i need a new battery even though the original still charges?
Anyone any thoughts? Have tried the creative site but with no success.
