USB Auto Detect Not Working...Please Help

Hi
Been having trouble with getting my PC to detect my Creative Zen when I attach it by USB, it always used to auto detect the device, but now I get an error noise Bee-Bow - which isn't encouraging...
I've tried connecting a USB Flash drive tonight and think I cocked up the instalation by cancelling the Win98 driver it wanted to install, but thought I was doing the right thing because the instructions said I should if I have XP, which I have.
For 2 devices no longer being detected I'm thinking that it's my PC, could anyone suggest a way to fix this, or a workaround please? I'd be very grateful as I have some files to transfer for a friend which are too big to email!
Many thanks.
HB

Fred langa covered this type of situation in two of his (excellent) recent newsletters.
See the sections titled 'Keep phantom devices at bay' and 'Restoring the HotPlug Manager' at http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070405/#langa1
If they don't fix it, see also http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070412/#langa00 -
Thank you Jzpop, I managed it in the end by installing hardware device via the Control Panel.
