Query about free insulation

I live in a council property and wondered if anyone knew how could go about getting the free cavity and loft insulation that everyone else gets for free? If you own or private rent then you can have it done for free, but in the terms and conditions all companies exclude council properties and I wondered why? British Gas say that they will need landlords permission, but do not specify council/private, so I am assuming they too are like the others and do not carry out works on council properties. Is this because the council do it themselves, and if so do I need to request this?

I find it hard to believe that your LA have not already insulated both.
Have you asked them why not, if so?
The free or subsidised offers have been around for years, but are ending this month.
Failing that, why not insulate your own loft-you'll get the (minimal) investment back several times over after one winter.

  • The short answer is you or the installer could be sued, you have no authority to make changes to a dwelling owned by someone else.

Your council owned home will unless its of an unusual construction such as natural stone, timber or metal framed, or concrete such as those around the Devon area will already be insulated, have you actually checked ? As others say, speak to your local authority and ask them if your insulation is up to 2012 standards !

  • All,
Having trusted the advise on this site for many years i would be very careful on advice from Money Saving expert on home insulation.
The recent offer in conjunction with Tesco for home cavity wall insulation with a bonus of 3000 Tesco Clubcard points has not materialised despite the proud boast from MSE of a "deal" and enter this code to claim your points.

MSE you need to get your facts straight or have partners that deliver unlike Tesco. This is clearly not a core business of theirs and i am staggered you have promoted this in conjunction with them. You have both failed me miserably.I spend in excess of £8k per year with Tesco and unless this is resolved i WILL go elsewhere. No idle threat as it dosn't take a lot of working out as to other supermarkets that are available, the Tesco offering generally is really going downhill.

The changes to the Energy Bill, include new laws on legal minimum energy efficiency standard for homes rented from a landlords from 2018. From 2016 new rules will allow councils and tenants to demand energy efficiency measures from landlords.
