American Express 5% cashback

I received my Amex platinum cashback card a couple of weeks ago. I've been putting as much of my petrol/supermarket spending on it to take advantage of the 5% initial cashback.

However I've just logged into my account - and I appear to be getting about 3.65% cashback? Can anyone shed any light?

Amex breaks it down like this;

Name - Total - Cashback - Bonus - Total
Coop - 25.98 - 0.31 - 0.62 - 0.93
Asda - 78.27 - 0.97 - 1.95 - 2.92

So the initial cashback column works out at just under 1.25%, the bonus works out at about 2.4% - so total is about 3.65%?

Has anyone else got the amex 5% cashback card and can confirm what they are getting?

  • Mines exactly the same. There's probably a really obvious answer though!

    Just to update - I've had a response from amex... I'm unsure whether the "technical problem" exists on just a handful of accounts.

    We are aware of this technical error due to which Cashback at the rate of 3.75% is being credited on your transactions. Our Technical Team is working to resolve this problem at the earliest. Please be assured that we will keep our promise and credit Cashback at the rate of 5%. The missing Cashback will be automatically applied to your account by the end of the 3 months period.

    Introductory rate = 5%, Normal rate = 1.25%, Bonus rate = 3.75%

    Spend £25.98, Eligible spend = £25
    Cashback = £25 x 1.25% = 31p
    Bonus cashback = £25 x 3.75% = 93p

    Spend £78.27, Eligible spend = £78
    Cashback = £78 x 1.25% = 97p
    Bonus cashback = £25 x 3.75% = £2.92

    You can guess what has happened at Amex ;)
    So yes, Amex are wrong but they know about it and should fix it by the time the cashback is paid out. Meanwhile, keep your own copy of the spend and cashback because you can only see it for 90 days on the website. Makes it difficult to complain at the end of the year if you haven't got your own copy.
  • I had exactly the same problem... 3.75% instead of 5% cashback. AMEX replied promptly to say the issue would be corrected by the anniversary date.

    If its happening to lots of people why don't they fix it?
