I have just bought an ipad, and it's a nice product but clearly absurdly fragile.
Any recommendations for a cover/case that will provide a measure of protection?

I got one of ebay for £6.99. Its a clear plastic back with a folding magnetic front an its more than ample. The magnetic front puts the ipad into standby when you close it and wakes it up when you open it.0

This did fit the 3, whether it fits the 4 now idk, but if you want proper protection one of these, or of a similar kind/make would do. But it adds bulk, and weight onto it.

I've got one that the iPad slides into and than closes over, it was about £10 from Dixons. I've dropped my iPad (not from a great height) and it was fine. My friend has one of the folding covers that attaches magnetically, her screen cracked when she dropped it as they provide so little protection. Yes, mine is a bit bulkier, but its safe.Bern :j0
