Activation of Windows on an already up and running comp?

Hi wondering if anyone can help. When I turned on my main comp today I had a message to say that my Windows XP needed activating and was not registered with Microsoft. I have had the comp for several years and have had no problems with this before. My Mum said it seemed a bit suspicious. I dug out my box and tried to enter the product code but it wouldn't take it and kept coming up with a box saying Incorrect Product Code. I also had the option of telephoning someone to activate. The screen seemed like it was a genuine Windows screen but after what my Mum said I am a bit dubious. I didn't get the chance to ring the number but again was a bit skeptical in case it was a scam of some kind. Any suggestions welcome please.
By the way Windows was installed on the comp for me when I got it but I do have the discs etc in my possession.

Start with calling 0800 018 8354 to see what they say. Post back if they don't or won't activate it or say you have to buy something.

Ringing up is ace - - follow the prompts on your computer and it gives you a long code. Them confirm you own the licence and have only installed on one pc, then it gives you another code to type back into your computer and you're all done.

All automated and very easy to do
