If you cancel your subscription they should leave you with BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, C4, C5, a music channel, a horror film channel and the shopping channels.

E4 is not included as Sky have to pay a fee to C4 to get it - this is a shame as the C4 co is at least partly owned by the Govt.
  • That's right, you'd still be able to watch the free channels without a sky subscription provided you have the card with the "yellow house" picture in it. The older plain cards would not work. (you would still need to have the card inserted)

But I guess that by now most if not all Sky cards in people's homes are of the new type.

I always thought that the Sky Viewing Cards were matched to the DigiBox, making them useless if you move the cards between boxes.

The pairing of card to box is not needed to view the free channels. Just needs to be latest issue card.

My father-in-law has just cancelled his sky subscription and now uses the Digi box for the free channels mentioned above, I am sure he just removed the Sky card from the box and got the freeview channels

When removing the card you get the free to air (FTA) channels e.g. BBC1/Sky News.

You need a sky yellow house card to view the Free to View (FTV) channels e.g. ITV1/C4 and C5 as they are still encrypted.

ITV may not still be FTV after the end of the month, it may go FTA if Sky are forced to lower their charges.

Card pairing is for the premium channels I believe. You can take your card to another box and watch channels from the family pack but no Sports/Movie channels.

And to answer the orignal question.

Loopy, you maybe referring to the Sky Box Office tricks.

Nah, the boxes have an internal limit that you can buy upto without having your phone line connected. (This is how sky know what pay per view you have taken)

This will go upto this limit then not allow any more orders until the box calls back to HQ and they reset the limit.

You will then get a big bill.

Even if you cancel your subscription and one day connect the box back, you'll be billed.

Nothings for free with Sky (except the sub-standard freesat service, *substandard to freeview offerings) and they have things sown up pretty well in the UK.
