    I've used two different phones (android) as a wireless hotspot and neither have been rooted. My current phone is on ICS and makes the whole process very easy.

    I've now bought a Samsung tablet with wifi only connectivity and it connects wirelessly very quickly and easily.

    My phone contract allows tethering which is something that has to be considered if you use the facility on a regular basis.
