CDI is just a collection of foreign shares kept here and you buy a share of that holding not the share direct? Its often just the big companies.
You are still basically trading in dollars I think but you pay in sterling, ask HL maybe as they do them I think. Theres no performance advantage just lower fees.

I think its similar to ADR. I hold Santander but they are not actually a FTSE company, they'd be one of the biggest. The real share is in Spain on the IBEX.
I pay in sterling for a bit of the ADR listing, BNC and then the price varies by both the Spanish share price but also the exchange rate. I never have to pay forex fees but if Euro becomes worthless in theory my shares are worth less.

In fact Santander is global not just Spain so the theory is the share price will always adjust for currency falling. Private traders really dont seem to get that but its fairly certain, like Zimbabwe shares went up as much as the currency went down (more or less)
