£800 tavel insurance!

My friends Mother is 81 years old and wants to go to Florida to visit her son. Last year she had a breast cancer scare but was given the all clear. However, the cheapest quote she can get to cover her holiday is £800.

She can't afford that and is considering not going. Does anyone know of a more sympathetic insurance company who will accept the doctor's confirmation that it was just tests and she has not got cancer?

  • Are you sure it is cancer scare that is driving up the premium? I suspect it is more a combination of age and destination. Her age is a big risk for any travel insurer and the cost of any medical treatment in the US is huge - which is why most providers offer levels of cover with and without the USA included. Doesn't mean that the price cannot be bettered though - moneysupermarket.com?

You might want to try a broker for something specialised. I know a friend of mine wanted to go on his honeymoon having had a brain tumour removed and they wanted £1400 to cover him for 2 weeks in Italy, needless to say him and his new wife stayed home!

https://www.insureforall.com - over 65's only, with phone number for medical conditions. Beware of relying on moneysupermarket only, they do not show all providers, only the ones that pay them the most money...
