Insurance company want over £1500

Hi I have been insured through right choice for 3 months now on my Toyota yaris the premium for the insurance was £2600 just recently my Toyota yaris broke down so I bought a new car I tried to just switch the car on the policy but they wanted another £500 deposit along with the £500 deposit I paid for the yaris three months ago that's a lot of money in just 3 months so I went for another insurer and got it cheaper. I cancelled the direct debit and contacted zenith which is who we were insured through (right choice being brokers) and according to them they have no record of the yaris even being insured so we left it at that and just yesterday I recieved a letter demanding over £1500 for the rest of the term but I really don't have that sort of money. I don't know what to do

HELP!

Go back to them telling them what you have typed here.

  • You would need to contact the Brokers not the Insurers if you insured through them rather than direct. If you have simply cancelled the DD and not informed the brokers they will assume you still want cover hence the demand for over £1,500 based on the fact you've already paid £500 deposit etc.

Insurers run all sorts of delegated authority schemes, MGAs etc and so just because Zenith didn't have your details on file doesnt automatically mean that the Right Choice have done anything untoward. A former client would only get a bordereaux from the brokers once every 6 months and they themselves were only an MGA and so when the actual insurers got the details (if ever) who knows

You need to act quickly as you evidently dont want them to void your policy for non-payment

Cancelling a DD for an insurance policy with a standard insurer DOES NOT normally end the contract for insurance itself, although it may doe for some month-by-month insurers such as Budget.

Normally, you agree to an annual policy for an annual price, even though you may take out a loan to pay the loan back over the year. Until you formally cancel the policy it's still in place and you still have to pay for it.

The situation you describe sounds a bit odd, though.

I think the following information would help us to work things out:

Did you contact the broker to cancel the policy?

Does the paperwork have the correct registration number?

Did your car appear as insured on askmid.com when it was insured?

What is the name of the insurer shown on the certificate of insurance?

Where did the certificate come from - in the post from the insurer or in person from the broker?
