Nationwide - cancelling and reinstating DDs

Does anybody know whether companies who are paid by DD will see them as cancelled when somebody cancel them i.e. by mistake and then reinstate them 5 minutes later?

But if it was possible to reinstate the DD mandates, that suggests they were never really cancelled. Once they're cancelled, the payee has to re-create them.

If you cancelled and reinstated a direct debit by online banking, the help selectable from the cancelling direct debits screen shows you this:
Please note: When you re-instate a Direct Debit, it will show as re-instated but it will not be opened. To re-open your Direct Debit, please ask the originator to contact.
Which suggests that even though the direct debit is reinstated within the direct debit list in online banking, it won't be active until the originator has set it up again. However, I believe when you cancel a direct debit through online banking, the instruction does not actually take effect until the following day, so if you reinstated it after 5 minutes you might be OK. Best not rely on that though. As you have a secure messaging facility within online banking, why not ask Nationwide directly?0 -
I thought as DD appears to be ACTIVE there was not need to be alarmed. I was only worried that there might be some automated instant messaging service in place to inform originator about the cancellation of DD.
I'll contact Nationwide tomorrow and ask, just to be sure that the DD is open.0 -

Indeed, I would be quite surprised if any organisation creates its ADDACS files in real time, so if the DD is cancelled and reinstated within a single business day then I wouldn't expect there to be any problem.0

At the very worst the ADDACS file will include the Cancelled by Payer, and Reinstated by Bank entries.
The issue here is how the Service User's (Originator) system will deal with this: Reinstated by Bank is seldom used, so you may find that the entry is ignored or incorrectly handled (a consequence of incorrect interpretation of the BACS Service User Manual or shoddy programming).
If this is the case, expect a letter from the Service User accusing you of cancelling the Direct Debit and asking you to contact them to set it up again.43580 -
