Cracked Conservatory Glass roof!!

Options
Hi all, noticed this weekend that there was at least an eight inch crack in one of my glass roof panels:eek:  After getting over the initial shock of it then came who or how it could have happened. Upon closer inspection I noticed that it was on the outer glaze of the panel but there are no visible dents, chips or anything else that could be attributed to something hard hitting it.

What I want to know is: Is there anyone else who's glass has cracked just purely because of the whether? Is it a known problem?? As most will agree, it was v hot this weekend and this is the only thing that I can think of has happened as there are no visible marks on the glass (pilkington k at that) or surrounding facia. It definitely wasn't there Sat AM, but there by Sat PM. It has now since spread to the other edge.

Thanks in advance for any info

I J

We had this. It was due to a screw in the frame which hadn't been tightened properly.

When the company came to inspect, they toofk out the sealed unit & it was very obvious the crack had been due to this screwhead not being flush.

However, the crack did appear within 1 day of installation.
  • We've had it since Sep 05. It's guaranteed for 10 years, apparently. But it is just another entry into the catalogue of errors that we've with this very expensive playroom!!

We did have blinds fitted about 6 weeks back. The arera where the screws are aren't near where the crack started, and the crack is on the outside, not the inner pane.
  • We had a conservatory built last summer, a few days ago I noticed a crack radiating out from a corner on the west side of the conservatory, the crack went from the corner towards the middle of the panel. A day later I noticed another crack in the other corner which mirrored the first crack! The second crack has now lengthened right across the pane. The cracks are only in the lower sheets and not the uppers.
I suspect that the footings on the West side were inadaqute (there are no building regs required) the wall and supporting footings may have sunk with the wet weather and caused stresses on the roof structure. I have heard of panels cracking in the heat, especially when blinds are fitted (which we dont have)- but we have had no high temperatures so far this year.
I am bringing in experts to investigate and will let you know the results!!
