are card details in iTunes secure?

I had to edit my card details for iTunes. There was initially a padlock with a red line through it so I aborted. Went back in via my desktop icon (from the last but one version of iTunes) and entered the details, but there was no padlock symbol (with or without a red line). There's a one liner that Apple uses standard encryption.
I wondered if Apple regarded the padlock symbol as a Windows thing.
I would be grateful if anyone could check the edit payment section of their account and see if it has the padlock or not. I don't know how secure their website is.
many thanks.
