Norwich & Peterborough Gold Classic application experience

Not guaranteed, and depends entirely on what you want it for.
For example, if you want the fee-free debit card abroad then you wouldn't use it as your main account, and 5 transactions per month (Light account requirement) is more hassle than a £500 transaction (Gold account requirement). More importantly, if you apply for an upgrade after 6 months of minimal usage, N&P will see your minimal usage and there's no guarantee of an upgrade.
Also, they do credit checks for both Gold Light accounts and again when upgrading to Gold Classic accounts, so the reason for declining a Gold Classic application is still going to apply when upgrading. This is if the reason for the original decline applies to the Gold Classic and Gold Light, which is likely.
Well, I had a gold light account, and I paid in £125/week(and £125/week out, the next day), as well as putting in 1p once/month(and out) as well (5 transactions) The gold classic account requires you to pay in £500/month, meaning that I have both 5 transactions/month, and I pay in at least £500/month (satisfying the criteria for both the light and classic account)
Every thing I've done took around 10 minutes to set up, and every thing is entirely automated. I do a similar thing at Nationwide
The only time £125 didn't go in, was when Lloyds had an error on their side, and I was charged £15 for a SO not coming out due to lack of funds. I was given the £15 back from Lloyds as well as £20-30 on top
Now I always keep £125 in there, as a buffer.Just after 6 months had passed, I asked to be upgraded. They upgraded, and told me that I had to pay in £500/month which I had been doing most months any way (The one month where that didn't happen was when Lloyds screwed up)
There's a reason why I wanted to satisfy the criteria of the gold classic account, whilst I had my gold light account and that reason was purely to eventually be upgraded
And now I get FREE Sentinel keys and card protection for every one, above the age of 18, in my household

Why not apply directly for a Gold Classic account? Had you tried this before and been declined?
The OP had been declined on several occasions, so your circumstances and N&Ps view on you both as customers may be different. My point is that, for the OP, applying for a Gold Light account would not mean guaranteed acceptance (there was obviously a reason why he was denied a Gold Classic for 18 months - why would this not apply for the Gold Light account as well?), and also, having a Gold Light account doesn't mean guaranteed acceptance for an upgrade.
More important for the OP would be the reason for the decline as opposed to suggesting that he applies for a different account.0 -
I would suggest OP apply for the classic and see what they give.
I applied for the light and was declined.
I think they are trying to weed out people that are just seeking a secondary account for foreign usage
I got a FlexDirect with free overdraft and Select credit card with Nationwide a few weeks after so I assume its not just down to risk. Why not apply directly for a Gold Classic account? Had you tried this before and been declined?

Yup, I applied for the gold classic, and they wouldn't let mehave that, but they let me have the gold light accountThe OP had been declined on several occasions, so your circumstances and N&Ps view on you both as customers may be different. Hmm fair enoughs, but people (like me) who have been denied for a gold classic account are offered a gold light account, which I guess is "easier" to use, because all you need is five 1p transactionsand also, having a Gold Light account doesn't mean guaranteed acceptance for an upgrade.

Fair point, but I was suggesting that if you pay in £500/month whilst on a gold light account, this might help in allowing you to get the gold classic account0 -

Fair point. I opened a Flexaccount (I don't even meet the minimum wage criteria) and I was accepted there and then.
3 months later, I got a select card. I can't remember if I got an OD or not, but if I did, I probably left it at zero0 -

Hmm but you could just make 5 card purchases!
I'll use it to pay my Luma card in 5 installments!
Still 6 months is a long time in terms of credit!0
