course fees

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone can help but here it is.

My son started a professional chef diploma in sept, the course itself is free but we have to pay for the course materials which amounts to £400.
We paid the 1st installment in august of £200 with the 2nd installment due on the 30th november.
My husband has been on ssp since the 5th october and we have no way of raising the money other than dubious means ie wonga loan etc.
I really dont wanna go down this route.
Does anyone have any experience of situations like this.
I really dont want my son to be kicked of the course but i just wont have the money to pay this when they want it.
I have contacted the college and am waiting for someone to get back to me.
Sorry for the waffle, i hope someone can advise.
SIMPLY BE-££577.11:eek:
Very BNPL - £353.00:o

have you looked into the student grants available on this site?

could he ask for cash fro relatives for Christmas instead of prezzies? even £10 or £20 is a good start...

do you have any junk I mean treasures that you could sell on facebook or ebay?

if you sell on facebook there would be no postage costs, and each time you get to £20 then give it to the college it may not be their preferred method of payment but they can't really refuse money.... and each time you get them cash it's 10% off your bill... it may be difficult to do over the next few weeks but it really is a doable figure...

how poorly is your husband - could he type reviews on dooyoo - you can either earn cash (cash out at £50) or amazon vouchers (cash out at £20) but you can buy all sorts on amazon e.g. toilet roll, and you could take the cash you would have spent at ASDA or wherever and out it in the college pot...

don't do the wonga route you'll end up in more of a pickle than you're in now... it may feel awful but £200 isn't insurmountable...

if you look on the debt free wanna be board there is a make £10 a day for the month of November that has a load of good ideas on how to bring in extra cash.... you can join in for inspiration part way through the month or just read the ideas...

all you need to do is make £20 ten times.... (I prefer little chunks they seem so much easier than bigger ones)...

    1 - Sell old CD's / DVD's on cex or music magpie...

2- old furniture in the garage?

    3 - old toys / clothes...

4 - broken jewellery silver or gold - cash it in...

5 - any old bags of change...

    6- broken laptops / electronics

    7 - old mobiles

    8 - do a car boot

9 - make a few crafty Christmas decorations and sell them on

10 - cash in any old text books on Amazon...

11 - down shift a brand at the supermarket

12 - do a store cupboard challenge to knock £20 off the shopping this week / month...

if your husband is in the house cos all day cos he's poorly if he's well enough to let people in and take their money you are perfectly placed to sell you old tat on facebook and each old piece that goes would get you closer...

the college will hopefully be understanding but if they aren't just try to ignore them - and give them each £20 as you get it. because that way they will see the bill coming down and 10% at a time is a big chunk of it (get receipts if they're being funny wotsits)... and cancel any direct debit that you may have set up or it may incur a charge at the bank...

don't get too worried and try to redirect the energy that you would have used worrying into selling bits...

I found selling junk to be really stressful at first but it's now really great to see my house be de junked. it's amazing how much carp I'd collected in this tiny 2 bed semi...
