Universal Jobmatch and Signing

I went to sign this afternoon and when I got there before signing the person said to me am I aware of the new Universal Jobmatch site. I said yes and I felt it was a poor design and I have looked for jobs that fulfil my criteria ( I work in IT support so can do a number of roles) and I said there is nothing for 200 miles.
I said I use certain sites that both agencies and recruiters use for IT like CW360, Reed, Jobserve etc as there are a lot of jobs listed daily. He said to me well here is a piece of paper this is what you need to do to sign up and get your reference number and you will need to do this before your next signing to demonstrate jobs you have applied for. I brought out my blackberry and said here is the jobs I have applied for this week alone, there are none on that site for me and therefore will not be doing it as it offers me nothing. He said well you will need to before your next signing otherwise you will receive a "direction" to.
I said there is no requiremement for me to do this in order to sign (as I understood it from both of the threads recently on here by Sarah and another person) He said mark my words, before next signing, everyone has to do it, with that his colleague on the next desk, she piped up yep, you will have o.
What does he mean by "Direction"?
Also is there a requirement? I thought there wasnt?
I apply for about 10 jobs a day easily and can demonstrate this no problem so dont see the requirement

I already posted this on the other thread, however-
after speaking to a JCP worker it appears that- yes you will have to eventually use the website to keep claiming JSA. The JCP have access to your account and they will be able to see when you search and when you apply.
Apparently, mandations related to the website are being trialled in a large amount of places at the moment and will go national within the next few months.
I think it's good for those people I know who fill in their books of 'job searches' and 'applied' on the bus on the way to sign on. But I agree, that for those who are genuinely searching and don't find the website useful, it's pretty unfair.0 -
Sorry missed your post in the other thread, I should have looked in there again to catchup.mixenvixen wrote: »I already posted this on the other thread, however-

I dont see how they can do this as there is nothing for me to apply for. They are obviously doing it for those that plan on sitting on their derriers for a lifetime unlike some of us but I can easily demonstrate I apply as I get confirmation emails that I have applied for work when I do. Even more so when there is no IT work in my area or surrounding and I have commuted to London for the last 12 years as this is where there is work and it is further than the 90 miles out of the zone that gets mentioned.
Granted there would be the "a job is a job" and dont necessarily have to be in my field for you to apply but I wont be signing up to this0 -

Think you almost hit the nail on the head there. The JCP will definitely say 'a job is a job' and unfortunately they will probably want to know why you can't apply for a job as a waiter, retail, admin... You may not have a choice whether you apply for these or not, I think that's partly the point in the new system. It's their money, their rules, they want to check you're following them fully.
Not that I agree with that- when I was on JSA they asked me to apply for a car shop- and I can't even drive!- but that's how they roll.0 -

A direction is basically a mandation.... It has to be something that would benefit you and help improve your chances of finding employment. You can be directed to register and use universal job match but not to give an advisor access.0 -
Thanks for the clarification. Do you reckon it would stand up that it would not benefit me and improve my chances:rotfl:A direction is basically a mandation.... UJM is the JCP flagship policy. It cannot be allowed to fail. Success will be measured in the number of registrations, ( by fair means or foul ) therefore the pressure at every level of JCP for JCP claimants to register.
The legal requirement of JCP claimants to even register is dubious. JCP staff can direct a JCP claimant to register, post a CV / profile on the site if it is deemed that failure to do so would substantially hinder the claimants ability so seek / gain employment.
Until JCP directions are considered it is unknown whether what situations would pass / fail that requirement.
What is clear is that JCP claimants do not have to give JCP staff access to their log on / password.
This is all linked to the Digital Agenda and the forthcoming Universal Credit so that as much as possible is done on line - potentially substantially reducing staff costs.
UJM is a watered down version of what the yanks have. There, to receive benefit you do have to be registered and provide benefit staff access to the account. You have been warned,0 -
can you point me to were you found that please?jobseeking_help wrote: »
