Saniflo bathroom

Options
Was going to put in offer on a property but have discovered it has a Saniflo system in main bathroom. Is this likely a sign of a problem? and is it expensive to rip this system out and replace with standard system?

Does anyone have any ideas please

Welcome! :) Saniflo probably means you don't have a soil stack nearby so yes it would a PITA and pricey be install a standard toilet because you'd need to get a soil stack connected to the sewers. Is the bathroom away from the original kitchen/ toilet? What do you have against a Saniflo?

I don't think anyone would put a Saniflo in if there wasn't a good reason for it but they work well and I wouldn't see it as a negative when buying a property.

The saniflo does seem to connect to the sewers via pipes under floor boards, its at the front of the house on the top floor but the kitchen is the opposite side of the house downstairs.

I'm not too sure that saniflo would be durable enough for us as we are family of 4 with 2 young children.

You have to train the children (and sometimes the adults!) not to put anything unsuitable down the loo.

Well that's a relief! Without that you'd be emptying the bucket each morning!

No one mentioned sewer connection - "soilstack"!

Other possible reasons are the connecting pipes may have to be narrower than Building Regs require (perhaps due to the lay-out/location, gravity is not sufficient etc.

But provided the saniflo was properly installed, and is used properly, there's no problem.

Yes it will connect, but likely not via a soil stack just skinny Saniflo pipes. Chances are your soil stack is at the back by the kitchen. Many family homes have a Saniflo, just don't let the kids put foreign bodies (eg. toys) down the toilet and flush.

It's the parents you have to watch out for - with attempted flushing of tampons, baby/face wipes, nappy liners, cotton buds and so on.

The linked post below is worth a read, although it is a tad biased so may only be good for its humour content ;-)

I assume you have another normal loo there too? (I think it is against building regulations to only have a macerator) I would be tempted to use the Saniflo for liquids only and use the other loo as the main toilet, just because of the horror stories I have read of blocked and backed up macerators. Also, a lot of plumbers will not touch a macerator with a 10ft barge pole, as I found out last year when we were looking at a property with one.

So long as it wasn't the main bathroom I wouldn't let it put me off, I think they are quite common for ensuites and additional bathrooms.
