Free itemised billing from Virgin

I signed up to NTL (Virgin) at the end of January on the phone/broadband/tv deal (but paying for each seperately, not part of a package) which costs me £26.50/month.

I called up last week to request itemised billing. The woman told me it was now free. I received my monthly bill this morning with all calls itemised. There is a cost for itemised billing listed as £0.00. So it looks as though it may be free now.

Did she give any hint that it may not be free if you are signed up to a package (as we are), or did you get the impression is it now free to everyone regardless? Do you still have to request it?

Yes you still have to request it. She didn't hint that itwas only free if you are on certain packages. She said that itemised billing is now free.

So it's worth calling to ask.

Its still showing as £1 a month in their latest price list.

Mine you they can afford to give it free the amount they charge for their calls, and connection charges.

Has anyone else telephone Virgin to see if they can get the free itemised billing?
  • I know I'm 18 months later than the last post, but you could see it as an update!

I emailed them about this and got:

"You can get details of all calls over £0.01 by signing up for our Itemised Billing service, which costs £1.00 per month."

I looked on the internet and most people seem to think this is a fair charge. I would agree if I got paper statements but I don't (and therefore they incur no extra cost for letting me see every call).

The thing that bothers me is that *all* my calls are under the 50p you-get-to-see-it magic number, so every month I get one charge that simply says calls unders 50p. It's like the banks skimming off 1p from everybody's interest and making millions. How do I know if what they are charging in this block is correct if I can't see it? It feels like extortion to have to pay to see my bill! What if that happening in a restaurant? Or the supermarket? Or at a hotel? It makes no sense to me. :o

Welcome to the MSE forums k42out.

Have you considered using www.call18185.co.uk for your calls instead?

Yes, you'll have to use their more expensive freephone gateway number, but despite being a great deal cheaper than Virgin (which, of course, is not difficult), they allow online access to customers' itemised calls lists - within a minute or two of making each.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Er, I get "400: Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)" for that link?

The reason I have Virgin phone is because when I signed up for broadband it was only an extra pound per month to have a phone. If you include the fact that I could also ditch BT (ie. no line rental) it actually reduced my bill.
