Life Assurance- Cancelling an existing Policy

I had a life assurance policy, which I cancelled under the advice of an FA, to take out a new policy with the same provider, but just added my son onto it.
Now it appears that i shouldn't have cancelled my existing poicy, merely ammended it, and that this was incorrect advice to have been given. (As this policy is now costing me some £650 more, despite the insurance being cheaper than when I took the original policy out.)
Can anyone shed some light on this and pass on their opinions please?
Many thanks
