Hi all, brief summary of my situation...
Brought a laptop for my girlfriend in April/May from Tesco, was paid for by my friend (he worked there so 10% discount), for no apparent reason the CD/DVD burner isn't working, I can still play CD's and watch DVD's but can't create them, tried various different programs and no luck so definitely a hardware failure.
Will Tesco repair/replace for free? only had it 7 months most, or do I need to try and use the manufacturers warranty that came with it?
A place in town is charging £40 for a replacement drive so it's not alot but it shouldn't of packed in this soon so I don't want to pay out of my own pocket!
Any help is muchly appreciated, thanks

It's possible that it came with a CD/DVD device which will burn CDs only. If you can find the CD/DVD device name/reference in Device Manager it can be looked up to see what features are provided.
Later... Another possibility is that the drive may burn only one 'type' of DVD, perhaps +R or -R...0 -
Sorry should of mentioned this in original post, have been using it to burn CD's and DVD's successfully for months before it stopped working, no change of brands or anything either with regards to the disc type.0

Ah - so it is broken, then!
The contract is with Tesco, since you bought it from them, so you need to go to them.0 -
So long as you have proof of purchase Tesco will replace it with in a year, Make sure you have all data that you need backed up before.
I would also delete the data from the machine, install ccleaner & wipe empty space from the disk.0 -

I have no receipt as I got my friend who worked there to purchase it for me.. doubt he's got it, I may of had it and lost it.. could showing bank statement of his transaction to buy it be enough proof?0 -
You need proof of purchase, not necessarily a receipt.
You are not entitled to an automatic replacement under SOGA. Tesco can repair, refund or replace at their discretion.
Or you can go direct to P-B under the manufacturer's warranty. No free lunch, and no free laptop
