This affects ALL windows users.

The next batch of MS security updates is going to be released this Tuesday coming. The batch includes:

5 Windows critical updates
1 MS Office critical update
1 MSN Messenger critical update
1 MS Exchange critical update
Info comes from HERE

If you have problems connecting to the update site on Tuesday, keep trying untill you get through. It will only be because the site traffic is heavy.

    Thanks Rex

Also read the service pack 2 thread and

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx

It will probably be snowed under by SP2 downloads, which takes about half a day on dial-up, so people who haven't installed it yet, like me, ought to do it from disk beforehand

Anyone who does not own a "legit" XP licence beware....Microsoft will be checking serials with this update.

I have heard from someone at MS that since SP2 they will not be checking licence numbers, as they would prefer to have SP2 installed as opposed to the hackable SP1 version.

There have been many articles written by the media on Microsoft's actions towards software piracy since Jan of this year.

There is currently a block list of about 20 product IDs which are generated from certain windows product keys for upgrading to SP1/2.

There has also been talk that from about mid-2005, security updates will be available careless of whether the version you are running is legal or not; but those wishing to download windows product updates will have to allow Microsoft to look at your product key and id from the windows registry and verify it is legal before you continue download.

This would be a more logical approach IMHO - keeping ALL systems secure for the benefit of everyone, but not allowing software improvements and bug-fixes to be downloaded by those who have not paid where the update is not security related.

Microsoft likes to change its mind. To be honest, I don't think anyone can say for certain what actions Microsoft will take regarding software piracy.... until they have actually taken them! Clearly, this issue is not a concern for the majority out there who have proper licenses and isn't going to be something most need to worry about.
