HSBC cant find my old account?

I am trying to get some statements from HSBC relating to an account I held with them for years up until March 2004. I assume I am correct in thinking that I can reclaim charges for the 3 years I was with them (April 2001 - closure of account March 2004?) prior to banking with someone else?
I now bank with First Direct. Twice I wrote to the data protection address for HSBC with the HSBC account number. However First Direct wrote back saying they had no record of the account. I wrote to HSBC again and wrote in bold and underline that the account number related to a HSBC account not first direct! I got a letter from HSBC yesterday saying they still can't find the account. I have got some odd bits of paperwork from back then and I definately have the account number right. I even have my first ever first direct statement which has the transfer of some funds from the HSBC account with that number on it!
Are they stalling or could they genuinely not have the records? I wrote my first letter back in February so they are really slowing down my case.
Grateful for any advice...

Weird. I'd phone them up and ask them to confirm the account number of an old account you used to have with them as they say it is incorrect.0

Thank you I will give it a try. It is odd.. I know for sure I have it right. They don't delete stuff do they?0

There's the possibility they havent searched archived records as some banks state they dont fall into the requirements of the Data Protection Act. In fact, they do. Ask for written confirmation that they have searched these records.
Alternatively the British Bankers Association provide a free service to trace dormant account so they may be worth a try. You can fill in a form online and they will write to you and keep you updated with their progress. See here for more information:

They do pretty much the same job, sending your details etc to the bank concerned but I suspect that HSBC will have a much harder time fobbing Them off with excuses. Good luck
