Paypal - cross-border fees?

I'm only an occasional ebay/PayPal user, but I've recently made a fairly high-value sale on ebay and been charged an unexpected amount by PayPal.
After querying it I have found out it was because of a cross-border fee.
I had no idea this would be a cross-border transaction, and don't see a way I could have found this out in advance - I only opened the ebay auction to UK bidders, and the winner's address was in the UK.
So my question is, is there any way of preventing ebay buyers paying via cross-border transactions?
Otherwise you have no idea of the possible PayPal fee involved, as there are different fees for different countries of origin.

Unfortunately no way to prevent this if their primary delivery address is in the UK There are a lot of buyers who send stuff to companies who forward overseas and some people may live here for 6 months of the year but have a Paypal account in their home country, but on probability this shouldn't happen that often.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
