Glad this was not in before clamping was "banned"
Bank fraud could soon be YOUR fault
Banks are trying to dump responsibility for credit and debit card fraud on to customers in a move that could cost families tens of millions of pounds.

They are making changes to small print which will allow them to block compensation to fraud victims from January.

Customers could be liable if they use a PIN that can be easily guessed or the bank decides they have been careless and allowed a criminal to see the number at a cash machine.

My PIN is 1234, they'll never guess that.
    I'm safe.

A pin that's easily guessed ?????? Er, they're all four digits and you have a 1 in 10000 chance of guessing it so every pin is equally easy or difficult to guess !!!!!

  • They do have a list of the most common ones so its quite easy for a scally to guess some.

I guess so. If the banks were serious about security then they would use fingerprint recognition and pin numbers and do away with cards. The technology is there ( schools use it for libraries and paying for food ) and it's cheap. Of course banks aren't actually interested in security when they can blame customers.

The Father of a friend of mine, was / is one of the developers of the security code used in the processing of transactions between banks and cash machines. He was also a consultant on chip & pin. He routinely tells me that security was second place to the cost of implementation, there were much safer proposals on the table when decisions were made on what system to adopt.

When i say was / is. The security system is a closely gaurded secret involving 3 independant parties, with 3 unique encryption technologies, and only each party know their own part, so despite having retired, is still retained as a consultant for any issues.

I don't want to worry you all but your PINs are already in the public domain. You are all open to fraud on your cards

  • Ah yes, but the chance of getting it right in the 3 goes you have are remote.
