If it is the CSCS (construction site safety) certificate that is stopping you, then you can take the test online.

I don't think it's expensive but the jobcentre may be able to fund it for you or at least give you an idea where you could get funding.

If they can't, why not contact the site bosses and see if one would sponsor you or "sub" you the money?

I've found that as I've got older, I am less self-conscious about asking for things and often if people can't help they can point you in the right direction.

Jobcentre does have some training fund and if people don't use it they will probably lose it.

    Best of luck.

CSCS is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme; it is not just a health and safety test. You can't take it online. You can't just waltz up to a construction site and ask one of the bosses to sub you the money.

You need to register with CSCS first to get a ref number.

Then book the test - it costs £17.50 and you will need to pay by credit card if you book over the phone or online.

    Then pass the test

Then, if you want a CSCS card, you have to apply for the card, depending on your role within construction and you need a previous employer to sign off that you have done that work in the past - or have an NVQ - or be signed up to do an NVQ. The card will cost £30.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

cscs card in my oppinion is a complete waste of time and a money makeing scheme always hs been and always will be

i think the jsa will be able to point you in the rite in getting 1 as i think you need to be working in the construction industry

if you do get to do the test make sure you also waste more money and get the card as most site forman wont let you onsite with just the certificate also the card is valid for 5 years where the certificate will only be valid for 2

It isn't a waste of time - the industry were killing too many people on site and as a result, the government of the time told them that they would have to legislate the industry so the biggest construction companies decided to adopt the scheme to make their construction sites safer. The card shows a level of health and safety awareness, and less people have been getting killed as a result. :T:T:T

I have a polish neighbour earning £12ph on a building site who has no CSCS card but because he's polish thats apparently ok. If I applied for the job I'd get refused entry on site for an interview because I don't have a CSCS card

    .

Are you sure that your neighbour does not have a CSCS card?
    According to the CSCS site:

it is possible to select different languages including Polish.

Getting fed up with it all at the moment?

I've been out of work for ages. I did some temp work for a couple of months a while back but thats all I've had in 2 years.

The economy is down the pan, there are few jobs around that you can "walk into" and the PM is making it harder for those of us at the bottom to survive while insisting we should work for any pittance we can get or for free.

Every job I look at these days is "must have experience, CSCS card, SIA licence, this, that, x,y,z" etc. I have a polish neighbour earning £12ph on a building site who has no CSCS card but because he's polish thats apparently ok. If I applied for the job I'd get refused entry on site for an interview because I don't have a CSCS card

Am I the only one finding more and more roadblocks are being put in front of me in order to get a job or are any of you finding it just as frustrating?

If you reply, a non-critical reply would be nice sharing your experience rather than your judgemental view on jobseekers being lazy dossers that can't be bothered etc.

I know you're not likely to have much spare cash at the moment but could you save up enough to get the CSCS card?

its a money making scam end of

    i hold an ecs card
    passport to safety
    ipaf card

the passport to saftey on its own costs 400
i have to retake the ipaf test every 5 years at a cost of 300
aswell as the ecs (cscs for electrical industry)

the test itself asks questions that has no relevance to the job itself

its another way of taxing people to work

the reason less people are being killed is becuase of mostly down to the banning of ladders onsite

any idiot can pass the cscs test doesnt mean it makes them safer on a building site and anyone that thinks it does is an idiot

Thank you - someone I know had just taken a site safety test and i wrongly assumed it was the same thing. :o

  • As a security guard, over the last few years, i have had to pay
£250+£250+£220 for my SIA card, plus passport photos . Some
security guards who use CCTV in public spaces have to pay for a
CCTV SIA card as well as the normal SIA card !

I am not judging here as I know it is a difficult job market out there, to the extent I finished my previous contract (fixed term contract) and after 3 months unemployed have taken a 4 level demotion to get a job with the same company, however it is a survival of the fittest and jobseekers need to show why they are the best candidates, I would speak to your jcp advisor though as I know for fact of at least 3 different areas where the cscs card is offered free by the job centre and local training providers, this also proves to jcp that you are willing to do courses, I know it's a useless course but is now standard within the industry so no disrespect but without you are not going to get a job on a site

It's not a thought - the figures over the last 15 ish years prove it.

A CSCS card is £30 and the test is £17.50. Hardly enough to cover the cost of the admin.
