He's done a search for new folders by date and nothing is showing up and he said if it had been renamed or moved that it would have come up in that search ?

    Have you tried chkdsk yet?

Open command prompt in elevated mode* and enter:
    chkdsk drive:
This will check for file system errors on the specified drive but not correct them. To correct any errors found, use:
    chkdsk drive: /f

*Click Start button. In the search box, type cmd. Press ctrl-shift-enter (together)

  • Where is the shared file physically located? I.e NAS drive or one of the networked.

How many computers on your home network and are they all on all of the time, how many other people have access to them especially the computer with the shared folder (if stored on a computer)

It's located on the network drive. 5 computers are connected to the network - 3 laptops and 2 PC's.

System has now created two folders, both called 'G' and both with an identical created date of 19/3/80 ????

Ok strange, folder tend not to delete themselves, saying that I was once repairing a computer that on every reboot more and more folders would go missing due to a faulty hard drive, although that was once in 15 years in the computer industry.

Have you checked the recycle bins of all the connected computers?, also have you tried searching for specific files that were in the folder? Especially on each individual computer, if it had been moved or deleted from the network drive onto one of the networked pc's this is where it could be.

Rather late update as we were away for a couple of days - still no further though :(

OH has run chkdsk drive: and nothing showed up, same with Norton (no viruses detected) but we are still missing our folders and files :( Completely stumped now. Thanks for all the suggestions though.

if they were ever there, recuva or search everything should find them, unless you have actually overwritten the area of disk that they were saved or have a nasty infection, norton doesn't pick up everything, try malwarebytes and tdsskiller. What brand of disk is it, some seagates had a firmware fault than can cause data loss.

you have to run chkdsk drive: /F to fix any errors.
