Water coming out of the plughole

I have a problem

For the last day or so, whenever I use the washing machine, the waste water goes up out of the plughole in the kitchen, rather thab going away down the waste pipe.

This has happened before - about 18 months ago I got a plumber in to fix it. It happend since - but righted itself after a couple of days.

Does anybody have any idea what causes this?

Now I'm the last person that should be replying but I wonder if you have a blockage somewhere? Is your drain blocked? Just an idea. Best of luck!

Yes sounds like you washer is connected to your sink wasted with a universal trap, and i could be slightly blocked.Just unscrew it and check for a blockage, easy to unscrew as it should only be hand tight.

    Hi there

Before you call a plumber and after taking the advice already posted maybe try washing the pipes out with washing soda crystals (about 65p from most supermarkets) and boiling water as it might be an accumulation of detergent/conditioner from your washing machine causing a partial blockage.

If it is this then you might be interested in the wonderful properties of white vinegar instead of conditioner in your wash - basically the vinegar gets rid of the detergent residue, softens your clothes and keeps the pipes clean. It doesn't make your clothes pong like a chip shop and is v.kind to skin.

I had a similar problem in a flat I lived in - unfortunately it was the upper flat's bath water coming into my kitchen sink. (yes disgusting - the layout of the pipework was a disgrace). I had no idea it was happening until I saw it one day - I used to get upset stomach/the runs a lot - and I suspect that was why as the sink was being continually contaminated with dirty water (stomach is churning now, can't believe I put up with it!). As a precautionery measure it might be a good idea to scald your sink with boiling water straight from the kettle before you use the sink to wash dishes, prepare food etc, or else use a plastic basin.

we had this.Ours was guck caught in the end of the washing machine waste pipe.Put a jug and a towel under the pipes where the machine connects (under the sink)before unscrewing the connector and then hook the guck out with a bent piece of wire. Some waste pipes also have a sort of sump plug underneath so you can unscrew it to let anything blocking it, out that way.
