What to wear on a night out...

I haven't been out in town for donkeys years... and come from a small town where jeans and a top is the norm. Im going out in Manchester on saturday as part of a group for my oh's birthday. Can anyone advise what to wear... i am 34yrs old, female and a size 12 now. I cant ask his friends as I dont yet know their partners.
To put it bluntly I want to look stunning without looking like mutton dressed as lamb to treat myself after losing weight. But likewise I dont want to stick out like a sore thumb and its been so long due to kids etc. That I just dont know what people wear.
My thoughts are jeans are not smart enough... so either a pencil skirt and top or a dress. Im going shopping on friday so need to know what to aim for.
Thanks for reading

Depends on where abouts in Manchester you are going.
I'm 35, and occasionally go out in Manchester ( but I'm not a size 12 lol) and I tend to wear skinny jeans, a trendy, sparkly going out top and massive huge heals, the lots of accessories to bling it up
If I was a size 12' I like that look but with a bustier (is that what they are called, tight and strapless) with a nice jacket x0 -
What about a nice dress and black tights?
I am similar to you 32, and going out in Manchester for my partners Christmas meal. Thats what I was thinking of wearing.0 -
Manchester's pretty diverse! Any idea where they're heading? I go out in Manchester and tend to wear pretty but not 'glam' dresses and flat shoes. One of my friends always wears jeans and a posh t shirt, another often comes out straight from work in businessy wear.
Most important tip, is take a coat! The 21 and under demographic don't bother but its flippin' freezing, wet and miserable up here this week.0 -
I have organised it lol! But we live in Yorkshire so I dont really know manchester. We are meeting in the Printworks in a bar (as I couldnt think of anywhere else that I definately knew how to get to lol)... but after that I was going to let the friends from manchester direct where we go. My OH is originally from that way but we moved over here 5 years ago. I thought either down Deansgate to the locks or to Canal Street, but I don't know these areas anymore.
I have the massive huge heels - snagged myself a gorgeous pair off ebay and have been practising walking. I'm sure it wasnt this hard when I was 18 lol! I would love to wear a bustier... but I'm not sure after 2 kids and losing weight I have the boobs for them anymore IYKWIM.... but definately something to try on Friday.
Thanks for the advice... as long as I know that whatever I pick I'm not going to look daft. Would defo prefer skinny jeans to a skirt but we may have to see when I try them on.0 -
One of my favourite places is here:
http://www.fabcafe.co.uk/
People of all ages, huge variety in what people are wearing, great music everybody knows and loads of nerdy memorabilia on the walls. Its great for a slightly older less cool crowd, of which I must now admit I am part of!0 -

I think the most important thing to remember is to wear something you feel comfortable in - nothing worse than trying to look cool and confident but spending the whole evening yanking your top up/skirt down! And remember the golden rule - boobs or legs, never both
you can't go wrong with jeans and a nice top, especially paired with killer heels. That way, you'll never look too dressed up or too casual, no matter what everyone else wears. 0 -
33 year old here that has gone back to uni, surrounded by 18-22 year old trendies. You are right with the MASSIVE heels. All the rage. Just to warn you though, boobs are not cool any more
Legs are though! So get the massive heels on, a short dress, but not get the boobs out.
HTH! Not good for me as I have massive jubblies and tummy to go with it (thank goodness for good legs). x0 -
Cant go wrong with a nice frock.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
