if your having your car moted and serviced at the same time any good garage will mot your car first before carrying out a service on it.

mot standereds are minimum safety standereds a service is a higher standered. main reason to service the car first.
also if it its an old car and likely to fail on a few things needed including the service could make the uneconomical to repair for the customer so would only cost the mot price to find out.
  • a price of a service is dependant on vehicle.

a ford fiesta compared to a audi TT for example.

manufacturers are making it more difficult because of certain things they place around and in the engine/bay that require a specialist tool that costs big money to purchase and take time to remove the item in sequence.

the said company are know to be OTT when it comes to mainting you vehicle for you.

the most youll get is probably water top up fluid top up oil and filter, the rest is a visual inspection.
some have been know to replace a non required item without permision or prior consent and charge the customer for the priveladge od doing so because their visial opinion of said part deemed them to replace it.

expect a list for immediate brake replacement back and front tyres, suspension parts, wiper blades (carefull here this isnt a required service item yet they may still change them and charge top whack for cheap brand), expect brake lines to be corroded, expect you exhaust system to be comepletey rusty and near death.

so does what i said make financial sense to use said company by their trained technitians (who has probably been on a 8 hour course to get the inhouse certificate to say the can change a spark plug) and been on a marketing course to push and pledge their items on customers to part with cash that doesnt need parting and replacing parts that dont need replacing?

no water is free, top up fluid off the shelf is about £3 oil they buy is bulk, and not garenteed to be a branded make you pay extra and over the odds for the non KW brand and a filter can be anywhere from £3-40 depending on vehicle and engine and 40 mins to complete the job. notice that spark plugs air filter pollen filter are not on the list of what they change!! a service to KF is just oil and filter and a top up here and there IF NECESSARY the rest is to condemn the car and get the customer to part with as much of his/her cash as possible so many many parts are seriosly need replacing or youll end up killing 99% of those on the road if you drive away like that!!.

The £100 interim sevice is probably an oil change.

Nothing else. If you need longlife oil etc it's extra.

  • Not sure what car you've got but if it's a Ford you can do worse than take advantage of the Ford RapidFit offer,Value Service & MOT for £129 (usually £139) and you get a years roadside assistance with the AA plus Nectar points:

Well my Toyota Auris needs a "full" service and MOT,I have booked into the local KF for next Tuesday, checked what they say they do and it sounds OK, I will try to be there to watch what they do.
    Will post back after then.

    Olias

err thats says replace oil.. Topup fluids

Everything else is a check which just happens to check the items they sell. Wonder how many of those parts you will be told needs replacing.

Not a patch on a proper service.

err, and spark plugs/fuel filter, air filter. Of course the rest is check, what else do you expect in a service? And of course they will advise replacement/repair if needed. Its up to you to decide if you follow their reccommendation, it's not compulsory (unless they say its needed for mot obviously)

I will say again - the OP is talking about a ten year old car. Most cars of that age are in the bangernomics range and are probably worth about £1k-2k. I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't be looking to spend £500 on a full manufacturers reccommended service. I just want the basics doing at the cheapest price.

I have always found kwik fit ok. I always talk to them, and explain that I am brassic skint and cannot afford any unnessessary work, and always find that they are sympathetic to that. Most of the staff are just low paid working class lads and so they know the score.

I recently had my ladrover freelander done. Local independant wanted £200 plus parts for a service and £58 for an MOT....Hmmmmmmm £258+ versus £100 for service and MOT at kwikfit which is what I paid, I think I know where I would go.

  • You're right Olias. The thing with a lot of these fast fit places is they need to supplement their low wages by getting bonuses for add ons, brake pads, shock absorbers etc. If they were paid a decent wage in the first place they probbaly wouldn't have such a reputation for blagging.

OK, just checked my Auris after a full service by QF. First I can see they have done everything listed on the service, new oil, fuel and air filters, changed oil, stripped down brakes etc. They asked if I wanted the brake fluid replacing as the car is almost 5 years old plus they said the battery is failing and the front brake discs were pitted and scored, I said no to this extra work and was not pressured into getting it done.
They also at my request fitted two new Michelin tyres and the front brake pads. Total cost £419.23
So yes they did try to sell me extras but I am satisfied with what they did and it is much cheaper than a Toyota garage.
