Why do we have plastic number plates in the UK?

" I have to say I think that UK plates stand out as some of the most clearly legible to be found anywhere.
Except for those idiots who have plates on their vehicles with illegal fonts and spacings! Also fixing screws strategically placed to change a letter to a number or vice versa.0 -
We also had pressed alloy plates that were reflective!
Yes, I had a Ford Sierra with these on. However, they were not as durable as the plastic plates, and soon looked very tatty."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Not sure about the durability of the plastic plates, some of the ones that I've bought in the past haven't lasted 12 months.
The best I've bought were from an online store and were heat sealed round the edges. The worst were from an auto factors and had water ingress round the edges within a few months.:(0 -
I was tempted to say "to stop the P.....s stealing them for scrap" but seriously they are better and easier to keep clean than metal ones. My car in France failed the CT (MOT) a few years ago as the metal plate was delaminating, it was only a few years old.0

They certainly do have an issue with our number plates!
My NZ cousin asked on the way back from Heathrow airport, "why do all the cars on this side of the road have yellow number plates and on the other side they have white?"The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

You still can get metal plates that are reflective and meet the current BS mark.
