I can get a case & keyboard for a Nexus7 for about £30 on Amazon.

    SO the OP can too.

There are a growing number of tablet/netbook hybrids and they are usual cheaper than a Windows netbook because the Android tablet OS does not have the big license costs of Microsoft Windows.

Google Docs does a decent job of managing files from Word, Excel, and Powerpoint and is certainly up to dealing with homework assignments.

Add in internet access, and that covers most activities.

If you do go the netbook/tablet hybrid route, remember that using Google Docs will keep all your data in the Google cloud, so you can jump to any available PC or laptop later.
Could be an option but no doubt the school will be using MS Office, and there's the risk that they may not be able to open documents created in other packages, or that formatting may get messed up.

I've only just downloaded LibreOffice (successor to Open Office) myself so have yet to test that theory!

I find Libre Office slower than office and a bit clunky. Perhaps that is just me. Office/student, 3 user, isn't that bad a price in the scheme of things.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your responses. After much thought I have decided to go for the Galaxy Note tablet. It is what she really wanted. Our intention is to upgrade our current computer so that she can use it for tasks that she may not be able to do on the galaxy.
I have seen that it is possible to purchase a keyboard to accompany the tablet so this may help.
Once again thanks for the help
