I can see why the insurance company are putting the blame on you, if that's what you told them.

I read it perfectly well several times, thank you. I'm well aware which side was hit, as well as how this is likely to have taken place, despite not being made aware of the location or the circumstances.

I refer you to rule 180 of the highway code.

No happy ending for me either I'm afraid, the other driver denied any responsibility and my insurance company paid her claim.

How many lanes was the road?
Where was you positioned in the road when you began the u-turn?
What was the other cars position?

The only scenario I can think of whereby op wouldn't necessarily be at fault would be if this car was using oncoming traffics lane to overtake - in which case op would still carry a small amount of fault for not checking mirrors.
