Buyer returning goods - how long should I wait?

Hi,

I'm just after a bit of advice on how long I should wait for a buyer to return goods. Timeline as follows:

5th October - buyer won auction
10th October - e-mail reminder sent for payment to be made
12th October - payment received
13th October - posted goods
17th October - e-mail received from buyer stating goods not as described & wanting refund of item and postage. Requested prompt response.
18th October - replied to buyer apologising and advising to return by recorded delivery (which I would also refund cost of).
31st October - e-mail received from buyer thanking me for being so reasonable and they would return them that week if they had time.

It is now the 21st November and I have had no contact from the buyer nor the goods returned. What should I do?

I really feel the buyer is taking the mick especially with their "prompt response required" and "I'll return them if I have time". I have done all I can to accomodate them and just want an end to this so would appreciate some advice.

Thanks for reading.

  • It's annoying being in limbo but I would just leave it, I don't think they could open a case on ebay now since 45 days have passed (I think it's from the purchase date not the paid date, can someone confirm?)
  • no its 45 days from payment, only another 4 days then you can forget about it.
I had this before, after receiving the item the buyer messaged me saying the item wasn't what she thought it was and could she return. I gritted my teeth and said yes even thou im a private seller, gave her my address and never heard from them again.

  • Maybe it was a buyer hoping if they complained you would give them at least a partial refund, it does happen.

As above I would do nothing.

Thanks for the replies everyone. What should I do if I receive the goods back after the 45 day period? Hopefully I won't receive them back but I really don't want to refund her after she will have taken so long to return.

Personally if that happened I would hold on to them until they sent me the money to return them back.
