Hi,
Could someone please tell me if I change to a 'N / g' type mini card in my laptop will I still get the better distance coverage whilst still using a 'g/a' type router.

I doubt it as you will still be using the "G" standard radio signal being transmitted by the router. If you want better range you'll need a different router, but first try repositioning the router to a higher point away from any metal obstructions.0
