Hi,
Does anyone know if the Social Work Bursary is still on offer for students entering in 2013? I know that it has been under reform but can't seem to find any information about what the changes will be.
I am applying for 2013 entry and would be leaving full time work to do so so this information would be important to me now to make provisions.
Thanks

I just found out the answer from the NHS helpine - so thought I would reply for anyone else that is looking for this as well!
I am absolutely gutted the social work bursary has been stopped for 2013 entry - apparently to stop the wrong sort of people from applying.!
Yeah thats great but what about attracting the right kind of people that need to support themselves.
I am so disappointed that I could cry - however I will still apply and struggle on.
What sort of govt so we have that thinks that this would be a good idea!
Also the majority of people applying for 2013 will already have submitted their UCAS Form and so it will do nothing for the crazy numbers applying for 2013. No doubt people will not be clued up on the Bursary news either until later next year and so will generate a mess of people accepting places to then pull out of them. Also people accepting a place thinking that you are getting a bursary when they in fact are not.0 -
The bursary equates to the same as funding via SF, so you are no worse off, whilst in study. It just means you have a slightly bigger debt on graduation than you were expecting
However by not having a bursary you will now be eligible to apply for any additional funding your uni has, so could Infact be better off0 -
Unfortunately I am worse off as I am not able to get any Student Loans or a Loan for the Fees as I already did a degree in 2001 that I took out loans etc for.0

Bursaries are offered when there is a shortage of applicants for any particular job or specialism. Whilst it's unfortunate for a individual who misses out, it makes no sense to keep offering extra money when there are enough candidates.0

You still had to pay the tuition fee anyway, that wasn't covered by the bursary. Also from all literature I've seen, the bursary has only been stopped for year 1 and the eligibility criteria, tightened for years 2&3.
Ok that does leave people in the lurch, if come year 2 they find they aren't entitled, but if nhs have pulled out then students have access to all the standard funding
The problem for you is not the change in bursary, but the fact you have already used SF and were using nhs funding as a way to re-enter education

the decision was only finalised last week... hence the lack of information available...
it has only been stopped for year one students and all students on a qualifying course will get it year 2 and 3...
it wouldn't cover the new fees for the course...
and you wouldn't be entitled to anything from SFE as you have a degree already sorry sweetie....
what would you have used to pay the rest of the fees / to live on? it's a tiny amount of money... could you just take one extra year out to save the £4.5 k of the first year bursary????
Stashbuster - 2014 98/100 - 2015 175/200 - 2016 501 / 500 2017 - 200 / 500 2018 3 / 500

If you've already got a degree why can't you do the postgraduate route? There is limited burseries still available for that.0

I've just been told by the social work burseries that post grad burseries are continuing but how much is not yet known, be Mar-May when they know.0

if a person chooses to study certain courses - in this case a social work degree / masters then they are entitled to a bursary from the NHS...
In this case the bursary is around £4.5 k a year in years 2, and 3 of the degree course. This is on top of any other finances the student would be entitled to.
