Does it matter there is no felt in the roof?

we are looking at houses and around here they are generally 1930's terrace, semis and none seem to have roof felt even on the ones with new roofs.
Is this normal? One house we didnt even bother to think about offering as you could see the roof had loads of holes, I guess we wouldnt have seen them if there was felt in place.
Is it something we should be budgeting for in our offers to get them refelted?
I have a feeling it could be expensive.

Yes and no lol
roofs did not always have felt.
i have seen scotch slate roofs over 70 years old with no water damage.
there are arguments for and against roof felt. i am all for roof felt, however its not there too compensate for a bad roofer.
the roof can survive without felt.
it is expensive and labour intensive, i had a quote for half a roof and it came out at 7k. (roof was nail sick)
BTW you budget for everything you can get away with for buying a house. My last purchase budgeted for 15k for re-roof with no intention of doing it in the next 2 years.0 -
In my opinion, so long as the roof structure is sound - e.g holes haven't been left open to let water in and rot the beams, why does it matter? Ours is 1930's, no roof felt. Roof looks a bit worn, all it means is we must be willing to pay £50 every now and then to pay to get a few tiles replaced. The roof has worked for last 80 years, all the wood is still sound, like I say, just a few tiles that need replacing every now and then.0

My first house was a 30's semi without roof felt. Never gave a moments trouble in 5 years.0

The roof in my sister's house dates back from the 30's and has no felt. The main problem with un-felted roofs is they get very dirty inside in the loft area.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Thanks all, I wont stress over that then as long as it doesnt have holes0

I'll certainly add it to my list of things to come off the price0
