I have had a stoma ( ileostomy ) for the last ten years and also suffer from depression ! I have worked part time but havent paid enough ni contrubutions to claim job seekers allowance . I had more surgery two years ago and tried after for incapacity benefit but was turned down and didnt appeal
I was wondering if there is anything else i could try and claim for as the benefit system is so baffling to me

Apply for Employment Support Allowance, the benefit which has/is replacing incapacity benefit.0

If you haven't the contributions for this type of JSA then you can claim means tested JSA. If you live with a working partner or have substantial savings then you won't be eligible and this will apply to ESA as well.
If you were ineligible for IB then you probably won't be eligible for ESA anyway as the requirements, although different, are usually considered to be more stringent.0 -
I would apply for ESA, I would get help from an orgonisation such as MIND or CAB or benefit and work webiste.
IF you get turned down like many people are i would encourage you to appeal.
Hope you get something0 -
Yes... ESA might well the the option with above comments in mind. Initially qualification for the benefit is via medical certificates... sicknotes... doctor will have to sign you unfit for work. After around 3 months you'd face the WCA (work capability assessment) to assess whether you should be placed on the main phase of the benefit or otherwise be found 'fit for work'.
There is the possiiblity in theory of getting DLA (disability living allowance) if you have relevant care/mobility needs. This benefit is not means tested.. paid to the disabled to help with extra costs of living."Do not attribute to conspiracy what can adequately be explained by incompetence" - rogerblack0
